About the artwork

Sometimes it's the quiet motifs along the way that tell the greatest stories. This picture was taken on the way to the famous Fish River Canyon in Namibia - the second largest canyon in the world. And yet it doesn't show the spectacular, but the simple: a dusty gravel track, an open ranch gate, a single vehicle lost on the endless road.

The view leads straight ahead, into an expanse that seems almost limitless. The desert landscape appears in soft shades of brown, framed by low bushes and distant ridges. The sky above is dramatic: turquoise blue, cloudy, alive. It is this interplay of dust and light, of road and horizon, that makes the picture so special. The moment appears calm - and yet there is a sense of movement. A vehicle approaches, swirling dust drifts across the road as a veil.

The open gate is inviting - not only geographically, but also symbolically. It stands for departure, for travelling on, for discovery. This scene is a familiar sight for anyone travelling through Africa's south: Piste, vastness, sky - and somewhere behind it a new destination. Perhaps a lodge. Perhaps the canyon itself. Maybe just a feeling of freedom.

Photographically, the picture is convincing in its depth and perspective. The central composition of the road creates strong lines that direct the eye. The sky almost completely takes over the upper half of the picture - as a counterweight to the dusty earth. The open gate forms a visual threshold: the familiar in front, the unknown behind.

This travel impression is ideal as a mural for people who harbour longing, openness and a thirst for adventure. Whether in the living room, workroom, travel agency, hotel, gallery or practice entrance - this picture brings expansiveness into the room. And it asks: Where is your journey taking you?

I then bought my digital SLR camera in 2014. The first photos.. Read more…
