The black ibis (Plegadis falcinellus) is a bird species from the family of the ibis and spoonbills. It is easily recognisable by its dark brown plumage, which also shows purple and green shades. It is an inhabitant of shallow wetlands and coastal areas. The bird nests mainly in trees or reed beds. The bird is 55 to 65 cm long and has a wingspan of 88 to 105 cm. The bird has the size and somewhat the appearance of a curlew, but with almost uniform black plumage. It's not a stiltwalker, though. At a short distance the head, upperparts, wings and tail are shiny green. In winter duller with head and neck inconspicuous white stripes; juvenile alike but browner and with less white stripe. Flies with broad, rounded wings, with beak bent down, neck stretched and legs slightly drooping; alternates fast wing beats with gliding flights, like a cormorant
