Small, teardrop-shaped Bled island beckons from the shore. There is the Church of the Assumption and a small museum, Provost's House, but the real thrill is the pletna (gondola) ride. The pletna puts you down on the south side at the monumental South Staircase (Južno Stopnišče), built in 1655. The staircase consists of 99 steps - a local tradition is for the husband to carry his new bride to the top. This very touristy spot in Slovenia is world-famous where many tourists visit every year.
