The side of the flower bud of this Strelitzia Nicolai (white bird of paradise) has a beautiful deep blue color. The bud can grow to the size of an adult's forearm. Five new buds emerge from this bud, each of which can produce at least ten different flowers.
These flowers have a blue-white color, unlike the brighter blue-orange color combination of the Strelizia Reginae, which is much better known. Another big difference with the Reginae is that this Nicolai plant can grow into a tree of several meters in height, while the Reginae always retains the size of a shrub.
Together with the yellow calyx of which this bud emerges and the soft green in the background, this gives a beautiful abstract image.
