About "Brick and Glass to the Clouds"

About the artwork

Standing on the quay of Kop van Zuid, I pointed my lens almost perpendicularly upwards. To the left rises a dark brick residential tower, rough and rhythmic in structure; to the right shines the iconic glass complex "De Rotterdam" in sleek silver. The contrast feels like a dialogue between past and future: tough harbour architecture versus ultramodern high-rise buildings. A lone cloud floats in the bright blue spring zenith, laying a soft brushstroke over the clean lines.

The photo was created during a lunch walk, when low sunlight made the windowpanes sparkle like mirrors. I wanted to capture the energy of this neighbourhood-a place where shipping history, skyscrapers and creative startups come together at a glance. The extreme frog perspective makes it seem as if the buildings are challenging each other as to who taps the sky first.

On the wall, the work immediately brings height and depth. In a living room with bright walls, it visually enlarges the space, while in an office it reminds of ambition and growth. Even above an industrial dining table, it mixes effortlessly with steel, wood and concrete accents. The image whispers: keep looking up, because in Rotterdam the sky is never the ceiling.
