Canal Grande di Venezia. The Canal Grande (Grand Canal) is the most important and largest canal in Venice in Italy. It is between 30 and 70 metres wide and about 5 metres deep. It is originally the course of an ancient river, possibly a branch of the Brenta, that snaked between the marshy islets on which Venice was later built. Since the Middle Ages, it has been the city's central waterway. Along the Grand Canal are many palaces, such as the Ca' Dario, Palazzo Vendramin-Calergi, Palazzo dei Camerlenghi, Ca' Pesaro, Ca' d'Oro, Ca' Rezzonico and the Palazzo Vernier dei Leoni with the Peggy Guggenheim Collection.
It is also home to several churches, of which the Basilica of Santa Maria della Salute is the most spectacular. There are four bridges over the Grand Canal: Rialto Bridge, the most famous and oldest Ponte dell'Accademia Ponte Degli Scalzi Ponte della Costituzione Both gondolas and public transport by boat (Vaporetto) frequently cross the canal. The Gondola-traghetto is a foot ferry that crosses the Grand Canal.
