We only have the photo left. This magnificent canopy is no longer there. The Nelson Mandela Bridge in Zoetermeer connects the Driemanspolder and Rokkeveen districts and spans the A12 and the railway line from The Hague to Gouda. This bicycle and pedestrian bridge was opened in 1992. Architect Johan Bak designed the bridge in the colours yellow and blue from the municipal coat of arms of Zoetermeer. Artist Arnold Hamelberg designed a stainless steel band separating the pedestrian part from the cyclists. The band creates a beautiful reflection of the canopy. In 2022, cracks were found in the structure and it was concluded that the bridge was unsafe in its current form. The canopy was removed and it is questionable whether it will ever return.
