About ‘Caring spoonbills’ by Cor Brok

This image captures a special moment of connection. We see two African spoonbills that appear to be engaged in an intimate encounter or a playful duel. It is the sort of moment that makes you, as the viewer, wonder: “What might they be saying to each other right now?”

A unique beak clash

The focal point of the photograph is, of course, those characteristic, spatula-shaped beaks. The birds cross their beaks in a way that is almost reminiscent of a sword fight, but without the aggression. The warm, orange-yellow colour of their faces and beaks stands out beautifully against their snow-white plumage. Their bright red eyes give the birds an alert, almost mischievous look.

What really gives this photo its character is the interplay of light and shadow:

The white feathers subtly catch the light, allowing you to clearly see the layering and softness of their wings.
The deep, shadowy background makes the two main subjects literally ‘stand out’. The rough, dark branch on which they stand reinforces this contrast.
There is movement in the scene; the tilted head of the upper bird creates a playful diagonal in the composition.

It offers a fascinating glimpse into the social world of these remarkable birds. Not a posed portrait, but a lively snapshot of nature that immediately captures the eye through its interaction and striking forms.
