Digital adaptation of the painting titled 'Children of the sea'. Four children play with a toy sailboat in the water by the beach. The eldest boy carries a child on his back. This lovely scene contains a message. The fishing children with their shabby clothes and meagre toys give us a picture of their future. The eldest boy carries the burden of the family on his shoulders and the little boat represents the hard life at sea. Jozef Israëls first painted this theme in 1863. It was hugely popular and Israëls repeated it many times afterwards. An orange balloon has been added to this reworked version, as a nod to the present in which (fishing) children are fortunately allowed to live a much better life.
