Maarten Verhees about Citerne Portugaise

El Jadida is a port city on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, in the El Jadida province of the same name, located in the Doukala-Abda region. During the French protectorate over Morocco (1912-1956), the city was called Mazagan. The city was taken by the Portuguese in 1502. They named it Mazagão and retained it as the only city in Morocco after 1541. Mazagão was repeatedly besieged by the Moroccans and finally came into Moroccan hands in 1769 after being largely destroyed by the Portuguese on their departure.A water cellar or cistern is an underground or covered basin for storing drinking or domestic water.
