An adult giraffe has a head to tail length of 3.5 to 4.8 meters and a tail length of 76 to 110 centimeters. Males generally grow larger than females. The coat of a giraffe is a striking feature. The coat has irregular, dark spots that are orange, chestnut brown, brown or almost black. They are separated by light hair (usually white or cream in color). The giraffe is a ruminant. It eats mainly leaves, shoots, fruits and buds of mimosa and the spiny acacia, but also other shrubs and trees. The plants contain an important source of calcium and proteins to support the giraffe's growth.
