Burg Eltz is one of the most picturesque and historically important castles in Germany. Located in the hills above the Moselle River, between Koblenz and Trier, it has been owned by the same family for more than 850 years. This continuity of ownership is quite rare among European castles.
Construction of the castle began in the 12th century, and various parts were added in the following centuries. The architecture includes Romanesque, Gothic and Baroque elements. Unlike many other castles, Burg Eltz was never destroyed during wars or conflicts. Its location and strategic alliances helped prevent its destruction.
The castle is known for its unique design, with multiple turrets, towers and half-timbered structures. It has eight towers, each between 30 and 40 metres high. The interior of Burg Eltz is well preserved and offers a glimpse of medieval life. The rooms are filled with original furniture, artworks and other historical objects.
Although somewhat remote, the castle can be reached via hiking trails or a shuttle bus from nearby towns. The journey through the picturesque forest is part of the charm of visiting Burg Eltz.
Often cited as one of the most beautiful castles in Germany and featured in several books, films and documentaries, Burg Eltz's combination of historical authenticity, architectural splendour and picturesque surroundings makes it a destination you should definitely visit for those interested in medieval history and architecture.
