Since the winter of 1897-1898, it was in Agay, a small fishing village near Saint-Raphaël, and then in Anthéor, a few kilometres away, that Louis Valtat stayed from autumn to spring, together with his wife Suzanne . He painted there on the beach where Auguste Renoir admired his painting skills. Saint-Raphaël is a French municipality in the Var department, in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. It is the capital of the canton of Saint-Raphaël, the seat of the urban community of Var Estérel Méditerranée, a coastal and spa resort on the Côte d'Azur. Louis Valtat (Dieppe, Normandy, 8 August 1869 - 2 January 1952) was a French painter and graphic artist who had ties to the Fauves ("the wild beasts", so called because of their wild use of colour), who first exhibited together in 1905 at the Salon d'Automne. He is known as a key figure in the stylistic transition in painting from Monet to Matisse. At the age of 17, he decided to pursue an artistic career and applied to the École des Beaux-Arts de Paris. Valtat then studied at the Académie Julian.
