The symbol of three conjoined spirals, also named triskele or triskelion, appears in many Western European cultures from Malta to Scotland from as early as Neolithic times. It is often considered a Celtic symbol but is in fact pre-Celtic. It is, for example, carved into the rock of a stone lozenge near the main entrance of the prehistoric grand passage tomb at Newgrange in County Meath, Ireland, which was built around 3200 BC. The symbol is also carved into a large rock in the tomb's end-chamber. The passage is designed in such a way that the sunlight lights up the symbol at the winter solstice.
