For most Houteners, the houses on the Vlondertuin will not be an unfamiliar concept. The red-, blue-, yellow- and green-coloured houses along the Rietplas are undoubtedly the most photographed houses in Houten. But why are these houses coloured?
The houses of 'De Goede Reede', as the project is officially called, were designed by architect Hans Been and realised by NCB Projectrealisatie in 2005. So they have been in Houten for about 14 years! Many Houteners get a holiday feeling from the colourful houses. Most think of the Antilles, the Caribbean or Scandinavia when seeing the houses. Brazil and Portugal are also mentioned, and the fact that the houses are near the Rietplas and therefore by the water is a prerequisite for the colourful houses, according to most Houteners.
