Common terns are colony-breeding birds of coastal and inland fish-rich waters. They prefer to breed on islets and other sites that are difficult for ground predators to reach, with an almost bare to grassy bottom. Common terns like to eat small roundfish, which are usually obtained while diving. In the absence of roundfish, they switch to small flatfish, shrimps, tadpoles, etc. 'Our' common terns winter along the West African coast, from Mauritania to Nigeria. (bird protection)
