How the earth, the universe came into being? No man was there when time began. The biblical book of Genesis recounts primal history, the creation of heaven and earth, and tells of chaos being called to order:
"God said, 'There must be light, and there was light.' God saw that the light was good, and he separated the light from the darkness; the light he called day, the darkness he called night. It became evening and it became morning. The first day." (Gen. 1: 3-5)
In this work (mixed media), I used a sheet of dark blue handmade paper marbled with gold powder. I picked up this beautiful sheet when, at the prestigious Liberty in London, I was marvelling at the ornate patterns on the finely woven cotton fabrics for which this department store is famous. On the third floor, somewhere in a corner next to a dark brown staircase, I found a compartment containing rolls of paper: including this dark blue-with-gold-worked paper. The waves and planes on the surface inspired me....it looked like a primal sea!
In my cupboard I found a pot of gold powder and some gum arabic. With careful brushstrokes, I enhanced the movement of the waves, the glow of the sun and with the sewing machine I embroidered the golden yellow rays of light. Hence the title of this work:
