About ‘Crocuses in the morning dew’ by Bastiaan Van der Ploeg

At the end of winter, crocuses are one of the first flowers to emerge. In their bulb in the ground, they have stored enough food to bloom so extremely early in the growing season, it heralds the end of winter. Due to the greatly cooled air just above the ground, water condenses on the grasses and herbs at night. Once the weak Sun comes through, this water will quickly evaporate again, but it gives the photographer a great opportunity to capture the glistening water droplets. By using a large aperture and a decent focal length, the depth of field is limited and the drops that are out of focus form a nice glowing round spot. The vegetation in the background forms a quiet bokeh: a fairytale image of the coming Spring is the result.
