About ‘Cycling in Ostend’ by Geert Van Baelen

I took this black-and-white photograph at the Koninklijke Gaanderijen in Ostend, one of the most distinctive spots on the Belgian coast. From the classical gallery with its stately columns, I looked out to see a cyclist riding peacefully along the coast. The dark window frame forms a striking border around the everyday scene and gives the photograph an almost cinematic quality.

The combination of historic architecture, the coastal landscape and the passing cyclist creates an atmospheric image in which Ostend’s past and present come together. The stark black and white enhances the contrasts and lends the photograph a timeless quality. A unique glimpse of Ostend, the Koninklijke Gaanderijen and life by the sea.
