This group of cypress trees with memorial cross (Croce di Prata) stands on the road from Pienza to San Quirico d'Orcia in the middle of the Val d'Orcia.
In classical antiquity, the cypress symbolised mourning, and even today the tree symbolises death. Many cemeteries in Tuscany are planted with cypress trees.
The photo features a dark vignette to draw attention to the group of trees with cross, the poppies providing some cheerfulness against the sadness of the memorial cross.
