Día de Muertos is a celebration of life and death. It originated in Mexico, but is now celebrated throughout Latin America. The colourful calaveras (skulls) and calacas (skeletons) are typical.
Día de Muertos originated several thousand years ago in the cultures of the Aztecs, Toltecs, Nahua and other peoples who felt that mourning their dead was disrespectful.
This photo was not taken in Mexico or Latin America, but in the centre of Rome in Piazza Navona.
