In 2007, I took this photo of one of Rotterdam's most iconic spots: De Hef, with the Erasmus Bridge behind it and, in the foreground, a lightning-fast water taxi cutting through the river. It is a typical Rotterdam scene in which the city's industrial and modern character come together beautifully.
The shot captures a unique moment in time - a time when De Hef still dominated the silhouette of the river Maas on a daily basis. The soft pastel colours of the sky form a surprising contrast to the steel structures and the yellow accent of the water taxi, giving the scene a warm and vibrant feel.
As someone who has followed Rotterdam with camera and heart for years, I still find this image one of the most typical faces of the city. It is an ode to the Rotterdam of then and now - powerful, dynamic and always on the move.
