The old CBS in Heerlen as a new office complex with Gerard Snelder as architect was built in 1974. Gerard Snelder worked for Gerrit Rietveld between 1933 and 1934 and settled in Maastricht in 1937. Initially at Alphons Boosten's office, he later worked as an independent architect. Gerard Snelders building can be considered a young monument that certainly should not be demolished. The old CBS building, on Kloosterweg in Heerlen fits, if one wants to see it, into the ideas of structuralism.
The old CBS complex in Heerlen is characterised by a grit with systematic linking of 16 similarly shaped units in a rectangular system.
The central enclosed courtyard continues the inner space, as it were, at the various entrance halls. Much attention has been paid to the design of paving, steps, watercourses and elements in the outdoor space and the sober and clean design. Green gardens surround the concrete monolith on all sides. The imposing building is an icon in the municipality of Heerlen and is widely known in the region.
