The Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes is a dune area between Zandvoort (North Holland) and the Langevelderslag in the municipality of Noordwijk (South Holland).
The dune area is designed for the extraction of drinking water for the city of Amsterdam; every year fifty million cubic metres of drinking water flow through this 3400-hectare area. Water has been extracted since 1853, making it the oldest water extraction area in the Netherlands. It is exploited by Waternet.
The dune area is a protected natural monument and notified to the European Commission as a Habitat Directive area. It therefore enjoys protection according to European regulations. Peace, space and nature are the main core values of this area. To guarantee this, only walking is permitted. It is also allowed to walk anywhere outside the paths. At 3400 hectares, the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes are one of the largest contiguous walking areas in the Netherlands.
