In Marrakech's bright sunlight, a weathered rug lies over a stone border, its fibres coarse and weathered by time. The orange and black patterns seem to light up under the sun, while the frayed edges testify to use and craft. In the background, the tannery unfolds, where hides are tanned and coloured, an ancient process that imbues this place with history and craftsmanship.
This picture was taken in one of Marrakech's traditional tanneries, where the air is filled with a mixture of smell and activity. The rags of fabric, leather and cloth hanging to dry everywhere combine to form a living painting of textures and colours. This particular rug, perhaps a work cloth or a dried piece of leather, folds with the contours of the ground, a silent witness to the artisanal processes that take place here every day.
