Watercolour on paper with a view of De Slufter nature reserve and the North Sea on Texel. One of the Dutch Wadden Islands. The path to the beach is just visible in the foreground.

This dune landscape was painted by Hans Sturris in 1992. The original watercolour measures 56×37 cm.

De Slufter - a unique piece of the Netherlands.
The Slufter is a rare open tidal area directly connected to the North Sea. This special nature reserve was created after attempts to turn it into an agricultural polder failed. Instead, nature was given free rein, and today De Slufter is a paradise for nature lovers, with a dynamic landscape of creeks and salt-tolerant plants such as glasswort, sea lavender and sea wormwood. In summer, the area turns beautifully purple because of the blooming sea lavender.

Besides the special flora, The Slufter is also an important bird breeding and resting area. Here, you can spot birds such as eider ducks, avocets and shelducks, while marine animals such as crabs, shrimps and flatfish live in the Slufter channel.
