About the artwork

Dutch winter

The work depicts a serene winter morning in the Netherlands, where the world is immersed in a silent spell of snow. A layer of fresh snow covers the meadows and fields, making them glisten in the early morning light. The trees stand silent and bare by the roadside, their branches heavily laden with the white burden of the night. In the distance, the outline of a farmhouse can be seen, surrounded by a thin mist creeping from the chimney, like a sign of warmth and life amid the cold.

A frozen ditch cuts through the landscape, its surface smooth and shiny like a mirror, reflecting the blue sky and the branches of the trees. Along the edges of the ditch, reeds stand proudly, their brown tops covered with a thin layer of ice. A lone bird flies low over the water, its wings moving almost silently in the cold morning air.

At work is an old mill, its sails motionless and covered with a thin layer of snow. The mill seems to be waiting for the first signs of life, its presence a silent reminder of the age-old connection between Dutch people and the land.

All in all, the work exudes an atmosphere of calm and stillness, in which the cold beauty of winter nature comes into its own, as only George Hendrik Breitner could capture it.
