The European brown bear (Ursus arctos arctos) is a subspecies of brown bear. The related Syrian brown bear lives in Turkey, among other places. The Italian population is sometimes considered a separate subspecies, the Marsican brown bear or Abruzzo bear (Ursus arctos marsicanus). Brown bears generally grow very large. Males grow 170 to 220 cm long and weigh 300 to 600 kg. Females are smaller, between 150 and 350 kg. Brown bears have a small tail of 6 to 21 centimetres and small, round ears. In general, brown bears have brown fur, but it can vary, from light yellowish grey to black. The brown bear is a diurnal animal, but in disturbed areas it only comes out 'at night. It is an omnivore with an extensive menu. Its diet consists of 85% plant foods, such as fruits, nuts, grasses, herbs, bark and roots, and of course honey. Animal food consists of carrion, insects and grubs, but it can also grab ungulates, from sheep to moose. A brown bear runs an average of 5 to 6 km/h, but can reach 50 to 60 km/h.
