The Lockheed Martin-F-35 Lightning II, also known as the Joint Strike Fighter, is a fighter jet that emerged from the U.S. Department of Defense's Joint Strike Fighter (JSF) program. As long as the program was unsuccessful, the F-35 was also called Joint Strike Fighter, but since Lockheed Martin's design won out over Boeing's design (model X-32), the name F-35 Lightning II was chosen. The name of the program shortly thereafter also became F-35 Lightning II program. This fighter jet is a further developed version of the Lockheed Martin-X-35.
Three variants of the F-35 are produced: a standard version (F-35A), a variant that can land vertically (F-35B) and a naval variant for use on aircraft carriers (F-35C).
