In this fiery work, a roller derby-jammer thunders through an urban environment at blazing speed. Her hair and roller skates are literally on fire, and her T-shirt says it like it is: "FAST AS HELL." The wings on her helmet give her a mythical look. As if Hermes herself is racing by on wheels.
The use of colour is intense: orange and red dominate and are contrasted by powerful black lines. Everything about this illustration exudes speed and power, with a nod to classic punk and zine culture (homemade booklets or magazines that originated in punk culture from the 1970s onwards).
This work brings together the speed, power and quirky flair of roller derby. Perfect for those who like to stand out on the track and on the wall.
Roller derby is a fast, physical team sport played on roller skates (quads) on an oval track. Two teams of five players each compete against each other in short rounds of play, called "jams".
Each team has one "jammer" (identified by a star on its helmet) who can score points by overtaking opponents on the track. The other players are "blockers" and try to help their own jammer and stop the opponent's jammer. This is done by strategic pushing, blocking and positioning.
The sport is intense, tactical and spectacular, with a strong sense of community and often a distinctive, punk-like culture surrounding it. It is mainly played by women, but there are also mixed and men's matches.
