The Finnish Air Force is part of the Finnish Armed Forces and was established on 6 March 1918.
The Finnish Air Force has responsibility for the defence and control of Finnish airspace. As a secondary task, the air force supports other Finnish authorities and participates in crisis management.
The Finnish Air Force's first aircraft was a gift from Sweden's Count Eric von Rosen. The count's personal lucky symbol, a blue swastika, was painted on the aircraft's wings. This symbol was the national insignia for all Finnish Air Force aircraft until the year 1945. After 1 April 1945, at the insistence of the Allies, the swastika was replaced by a blue and white round insignia.
