On 24 April 2016, while still reeling from the climb atop Mount Batur, I watched the night slowly dissolve into a warm, golden glow. The sky turned from deep blue to soft orange, and below me a thin layer of clouds slid across the landscape like a living shadow. On the horizon, the sun began to break through the clouds like a bright flame, its light shining in the lake water. My gaze was automatically drawn to Mount Agung, which lay there silent and massive, partly hidden in vapour, as if protecting the transition from night to day. An almost sacred silence hung around me; only the soft whisper of the wind reminded me that I was part of this moment. As the light grew stronger, it felt like Bali showed itself fully for a moment - raw, pure and full of promise.
