I will be in Ericeira on 1 January. A small seaside resort on Portugal's west coast, near Lisbon. In summer, the village bubbles with energy, the boulevards are crowded with tourists and surfers enjoy the sea.
But on this sunny January day, there was little of that. The town was quiet, the car parks by the sea were empty and there was not a surfer in sight. There was, however, a fisherman by the beach. Who was perhaps enjoying this season without crowds and could cast his rod quietly on this day.
I was standing on the road that ran, just a little higher up, along a beach when I saw him. He was standing as he stood on the basalt blocks along the shore, where they were breaking sea. It was late afternoon and the low sun was creating a silver lane on the sea, which exactly matched the fisherman. His silhouette stood out clearly against the glare of the water. The sky on the horizon was beginning to turn cautiously pink-orange as against that the day was almost over.
A wonderfully peaceful start to the new year.
