The Anaga Mountains with their lush vegetation are located in the north-east of the Canary Island of Tenerife and form a direct contrast to the barren and dry south-west. Clouds accumulate on the mountain ranges in the south and then rain down, ensuring a constantly humid climate and a diverse plant life. Particularly enchanting are the last laurel forests in Europe, which are swept by the clouds and then literally become cloud forests. Until the last ice age 40 million years ago, the Mediterranean was covered by this type of forest, but it has only survived in a few places. A walk among the twisted, moss-covered trunks of this wet forest is like a journey into the past.
