About ‘Frozen figurehead on sailing ship Northern Lights’ by Martijn Smeets

Frozen bow on S/V Noorderlicht. The Noorderlicht is a 1910 two-masted ship in the striking colors of red and yellow. The ship is used as an expedition sailing vessel in Spitsbergen (Svalbard) and Norway.

The metal bow makes the ship suitable for sailing through waters with large ice floes and ice formations. In this photo, the female figurehead is partially covered by the ice formation on the ship's bow.

The photo was taken during an expedition trip on sailing ship S/V Northern Lights to Spitsbergen (Svalbard, Norway).
