Gabriel Metsu (1629 - 1667) was a Dutch painter of the Golden Age. He painted many genre pieces, some of which can also be seen as portraits. Metsu is known for his silver colourite, control of light and hidden eroticism. In recent years, however, Metsu has stood rather in the shadow of Delft artist Johannes Vermeer. As a result, his work has not received the recognition and appreciation it deserves.
