Fog can rise in this forest as quickly as it can disappear again. 10 minutes before taking this picture, the valley was still filled with a thick mist. Here, the orange autumn colour of the ferns contrasts beautifully with the green of the grass and trees and the blue sky. The post-processing of the photo creates a painterly effect that almost makes you think you are looking at a painting. If you look closely, you can see a walker on the slope below the crown. Without this walker as a reference point, you would have no idea about the sheer size of this magnificent tree. In my Madeira album, you will also find this photo with a different processing and without the walker.

The magical cloud forest of Fanal (Madeira), with its beautiful, ancient laurel trees captures the imagination of every photographer. The bizarre shapes of the trees give the primeval forest a fairytale atmosphere on a sunny day, but when the mist sets in, the forest changes from fairytale-like to ghostly (in a good way, admittedly :-) ). You almost imagine yourself in Middle-earth.

Lagoa do Fanal is located in the northwest of the island on the Paul da Serra plateau. You can really wander around for hours and be amazed by the mysterious trees on a dreamlike walk. This Unesco World Heritage Site is a must-see for any nature lover.
