About "Golden harvest in San Juan Chamula, Mexico"

by Mark Sluijmers

About the artwork

Hanging against a rough aerated concrete wall are rows of corn cobs in warm hues: deep yellow, cream and almost black. Each cob is carefully hung, the leaves twisted into natural strands. The play of light and shadow emphasises the texture of the wall as well as the richness of the harvest.

My inspiration came while walking through the mountain village of San Juan Chamula in Mexico. Here, corn is not only food, but also a symbol of culture, tradition and community. This scene touched me by its simplicity and power, an everyday scene that is also a silent celebration of the bond between man and earth.

The atmosphere is warm, earthy and timeless. You can almost feel the smell of dried maize and the gentle rustling in the wind. The portrait aims to show that beauty lies in the everyday, and that traditions are valuable to cherish. It reminds us of the connection to the land and the care with which food is preserved and shared.

In an interior, this work brings colour and character. Its warm tones and natural textures fit effortlessly into both modern and country interiors, creating an eye-catching piece full of stories. It is an invitation to reflect on where our food comes from and to see beauty in pure simplicity.
