Arthur Dove developed a visual language in which simplified, semi-abstract forms and earthy colors express the essence of the rural American landscape.
He believed that the most important characteristic of nature was its integrity, so his paintings have general elements and few colors. Here grain waves blowing in the wind and the furrows in a freshly plowed field are taken from nature and become symbols. These forms are visually unified, as if viewing the scene from the window of a passing train. The light is that of a warm late summer afternoon. In its rounded heaviness, the central funnel shape alludes to organic maturity, as do the other swelling forms in a limited but warm palette of earthy browns, yellow and green greens and burnt oranges. Although the colors of nature predominate, they are not used realistically.
Arthur Dove (Aug. 2, 1880, Canandaigue, New York - Nov. 23, 1946) was an American painter from a wealthy family. He was one of America's first abstract painters.
Dove's work was based on nature. He referred to the abstract forms drawn from a landscape as an extraction.
