It is late July, full summer and this barley is basking in the sun needed to complete the last bit of the ripening process. Once the grain is hard-ripe, the crop is ready to be threshed. This barley is not quite there yet, as the ears start drooping as soon as they are really ripe. Barley can be recognised by its long husk needles; by comparison, wheat has virtually no husk needles. Barley is mainly used to make whiskey and beer.
