About the artwork

in full: The Guild of the Young Footbow welcomes mayor and chief Jan Karel de Cordes A crossbow (or armbar, arbalest, footbow) is a weapon with which short arrows can be shot. The militia or guild of marksmen was a local militia established in the Middle Ages, consisting of citizens, to protect and defend their town or village in the event of an external attack by, for example, roving gangs of robbers or foreign armies, and internally to maintain order in the event of riots, fire or prominent visitors. The core tasks of the militia were thus similar to those of contemporary order and emergency services such as the police, fire brigade and army. Balthasar van den Bossche (1681 - 1715) was a Southern Dutch painter from the late Baroque period. He specialised in history paintings, genre paintings and gallery paintings.
