Gunung Abang (left) and the north coast of Bali (right), photographed at 07:19 from Agung volcano at about 2800 metres altitude.
At 3142 metres, Gunung Agung is the highest mountain on the island of Bali and takes at least 12 hours to hike up and down. To see the sunrise from the volcano, our hyke started at 00:00 at the foot of the mountain.
The hyke itself was tough, at times with no clear footpaths. Above the tree line, the wind blows hard and constantly, as can be seen from the grass in the photo. Still, in between the ordeal, I got a chance to capture this photo. It was a moment of calm in a physical and mental battle against nature.
The contrast between dark and light in the composition seems to illustrate this struggle well: you look from the shadows to a point of light on a ridge, a kind of 'light at the end of the tunnel'.
