Haarlem is my old city, and this spot, the Gravestenenbrug, has always had something special for me. From here you look out over the Spaarne, with its characteristic waterfront facades and the tower of the Bakenesserkerk subtly rising above the rooftops. It is a corner of the city that does not stand out for its grandeur, but rather for its understated charm.
It was early evening. The light was softening, the sky was clear and the water mirrored the city almost perfectly. I had set up my camera and carefully chosen the composition: bridge, facades, water and church in balance. No people, no movement, all focus on the lines, the light and the tranquillity of the moment.
At home, I developed the shot further. Contrast, colour and detail are subtly tuned to maintain the calm evening atmosphere. No embellishments, just Haarlem as I saw and felt it.
The result is a portrait of a city that is not only beautiful, but also meaningful. An image that feels like coming home to me, quiet, recognizable and full of character.
