The old Droste factory, located on the Spaarne in Haarlem, captured in the early evening-just before the blue hour sets in.
This striking brick building with its characteristic tower and the Dutch flag on the roof is a recognizable part of the Haarlem cityscape. In 1890, confectioner and biscuit maker Gerardus Johannes Droste opened his first factory here. What started as a modest enterprise grew into an international chocolate brand, but its origins are here, on the waterfront.
For this shot, I deliberately chose the transition moment between day and night. The sky was already beginning to cool in colour, and the water lay still. The reflection of the building in the Spaarne reinforced the peace and symmetry of the image. The factory stands stately, unadorned, an honest representation of industrial architecture with character.
The composition is clean and balanced: factory, canal and sky in harmony. At home, I fleshed out the image with attention to colour, contrast and detail, preserving the mood of the moment.
The result is a visual tribute to a piece of Haarlem history, quiet, powerful and full of meaning.
