Shot of Haarlem, taken from the quay on the Spaarne, with the Grote or St Bavo church clearly in view.
I really went out there for this photo. Haarlem has been my home for years, and I wanted to make an image that shows the city as I experienced it myself: quiet, full of character, and with that typical Dutch charm. The spot on the Spaarne where you see the row of facades with St Bavo behind it has always been one of the most beautiful views for me.
It was at the end of the day. The light became softer, the colours warmer, and the city took on that calm atmosphere you only see in the last hour before sunset. I chose a slow shutter speed, which made the water mirror-smooth and brought out the reflection of the buildings and the church beautifully.
At home, I developed the shot further. As always, I take my time with this, colour, contrast, and details have to be right. Not only technically, but also in terms of feeling.
The result is a cityscape that is personal to me. Haarlem as I know and cherish it, captured in a moment of peace and reflection.
