It is a place you can always go back to. There is always something to see because there is always something happening. A ship leaves or a ship sails in. Even on a grey October day, a boat still sails into the harbour. It is a view that has been like this for centuries although the salt water and tides have disappeared and the sails of yachts have replaced the sails of cargo ships from centuries gone by. But the wide-open view has remained with its alternation of sky and clouds above it the harbour lights that with their green and red indicate a safe path to the quiet inner harbour of the old town of Hoorn. Then, from the jetty, you can dream nostalgically of distant destinations and voyages of discovery, of ships that returned laden with spices from the distant tropics or the fleet of numerous fishing vessels that fished the Zuiderzee. That must have been a horizon where, under a threatening sky like this, hundreds of sails moved across the water.
