The Helgoland lighthouse is located on the Oberland. It was built during the Second World War as an anti-aircraft tower or anti-aircraft control centre and was put into operation as a new lighthouse in 1952 to replace the old one, which was destroyed during the war. The lighthouse has the most powerful beacon on German lighthouses, which can be recognised on clear nights from a distance of 28 nautical miles (e.g. on the East Frisian Islands in the south and in Eiderstedt in the east).
