Syria, Palmyra - In the vastness of the Syrian desert, a herd of shepherds moves slowly through the barren landscape. The dust rising behind the animals indicates their movement, while the shepherd in the middle of the herd is little more than a small dot in the vast plain. The scene impressively conveys how vast, silent and timeless this region appears - a landscape that has been characterised by the rhythm of nomadic life for thousands of years. Despite the apparent emptiness, the desert is a sensitively functioning ecosystem in which people, animals and vegetation have always been connected. The gentle shapes of the mountains in the background blend in with the monochrome natural tones and reinforce the effect of the vast space. The picture tells a quiet story of tradition, survival and adaptation: shepherds and their animals continue to move along ancient routes as if the world outside this desert had never changed. It is a motif that possesses both documentary and atmospheric strength - a snapshot that unites the contrast between movement and infinity.
