If you stand on one of the hills on the Causeway Coast that circle this special place, you will look down on thousands of basalt pillars that run from the coast into the Atlantic Ocean. It is an impressive sight, these 40,000 hexagonal stepping stones that date back to a nearly 60-million-year-old volcanic age. The star in the legend of how this came to be is Fionn mac Cumhaill (Finn McCool) - an Irish giant who quarreled with the Scottish giant Benandonner. According to legend, the two giants hated each other. One day, after yet another insult from Benandonner, Fionn laid a path of stepping stones to reach Scotland, but Benandonner smashed it. The result was the Giant's Causeway.
