About ‘Hidden Passage at Lange Voorhout’ by Robert Jan Smit

Behind the stately facades of Lange Voorhout, one of The Hague's most characteristic avenues, lies a place that does not immediately reveal itself to the passer-by. This narrow alley with its austere gate forms a silent transition between past and present. The monastery church, which has dominated the street scene here for centuries, forms the historical backdrop to this hidden passage. The weathered bricks, damp pavement and subdued light reinforce the sense of timelessness and seclusion.
This is The Hague at its most subdued: no grand architecture or open squares, but an intimate piece of city where history remains tangible. For centuries, clergy, residents and visitors walked here, each with their own destination, while the city continued to develop around them. Today, this passageway leads not only past religious heritage, but also towards the modern General Audit Office building. This proximity of old and new underlines the stratification of the city, without disturbing the historical character of the place.
The photograph captures this moment of transition and tranquillity. The lone figure in the gate enhances the sense of scale and stillness, while the parked bikes and wet pavement subtly allude to contemporary city life. It is an image that invites you to look, to slow down, and to discover the hidden stories that The Hague has to offer. A photographic tribute to a place where history does not impose itself, but patiently waits to be found.
